This is a piece for string quartet I wrote in July 2002.

Two ideas came together for this piece: 1) A warm-up exercise for the voice (do-mi-so-re-do) I set to minor (i.e., la-do-mi-ti-la) which yielded the motif first appearing in bars 1 and 2 in the violin 1 part. 2) The 4-part round "Mir lächelt kein Frühling" by Johannes Brahms that is played in rhythmical variation in the cello part in bars 38 to 59 (and parts of it in other parts of the piece).

A violinist of the first string quartet that played this piece compared it to Crisantemi by Giacomo Puccini, probably due to the prominent dissonance in bar 2.

Recently I have been asked about the tempo: Rather count bars than quarter notes. Sixty bars per minute (i.e. one bar per second) is too fast.
