Biography

Don Rath Jr. (b. 1956) is an American composer, arranger, guitarist, and music publisher born January 14, 1956, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Though largely self-taught in composition, his chamber works have garnered international recognition for their melodic accessibility and emotional depth.

Rath's musical journey began in elementary school with flute-o-phone and cornet, but he found his true voice after discovering the guitar in 1970 during his freshman year of high school. These early experiments with the instrument led to his first compositions and established music as his primary mode of artistic expression.

As a composer, Rath specializes in works for stringed instruments, crafting what he describes as music that "bridges the gap between true classical music and modern song forms." His compositional style blends elements of chamber music, new age, and ambient genres, characterized by memorable melodies, careful attention to instrumental color, and romantic expression ranging from playful to contemplative.

Rath has released four albums: Night Wind, Heart Strings, Dawn of a New Day, and Colors of Cello. His works are available through major digital platforms including Apple Music and YouTube.

For ten years, he served as a screener for the Grammy Awards, an experience that deepened his understanding of contemporary composition and melodic craft. His music has been praised internationally, with listeners noting its thoughtful orchestration, memorable melodies, and stylistic diversity across formats from string quartets to full orchestral arrangements.
